Partie Occidentale Du Canada Ou De La Nouvelle France by Vincenzo Coronelli, 1688
24″ High x 31″ Wide Poster
This is a beautifully ornate color map of the entire Great Lakes region as it was perceived in 1688.
To Europeans in the late 1600s, water routes in the interior of North America were known in greater detail than the land itself. A Cosmographer of the Republic of Venice, Vincenzo Maria Coronelli produced this map in a 1688 atlas. It was based on reports of French and Spanish explorers.
The original map can be viewed at the American Geographical Society Library, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Special thanks to the AGS Library for reproduction permission.
