Nitrate is the most common groundwater contaminant in Wisconsin, affecting municipal and private wells. High levels of nitrate can reduce the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, potentially leading to serious health complications. Wisconsin’s Groundwater Coordinating Council coordinates groundwater research and monitoring efforts.
